LOVELY LISBOA
LISBON, PORTUGAL: A CITY OF HISTORY, RESILIENCE, AND A GROWING BLACK COMMUNITY
Lisbon, known as Lisboa in Portuguese, is one of the oldest cities in Western Europe, with a rich and complex history. During the 15th century, it became a major global port, playing a crucial role in world trade—including the transatlantic slave trade. By the 1550s, Lisbon had up to 70 slave markets, where enslaved Africans, primarily from West Central Africa, were sold in ways disturbingly similar to livestock. The city's first African neighborhood, Mocambo, was a direct result of this forced migration, marking one of the earliest Black communities in Europe.
Despite its painful past, Lisbon today is home to a thriving and vibrant Black expatriate community. Many African Americans have chosen Lisbon as their new home, drawn by its beauty, culture, and welcoming atmosphere. This community celebrates Black culture through weekly gatherings, Black history events, and important holidays, creating a sense of belonging in the heart of Portugal.
For African American travelers, Lisbon offers a unique opportunity to explore a city with deep African roots while connecting with a growing Black expat network. Whether you're visiting for a short stay or considering making it home, Lisbon's Black community is ready to welcome you.
