THE GRAND GHANA
The word “Ghana" means “Warrior King”.
Ghana was the first sub-saharian country to gain independence from British Colonial rule.
Ghana became independent in 1957. The official language of Ghana is English. Kwame Nkrumah led the fight for independnce for Ghana.
He died in 1972 from an incurable illness and his remains lie in a tomb in the City of Accra. 33.48 million poeple now reside in Ghana includiing many native groups including the Akans and the Ashanti.
Ghana is known as the Gold Coast because gold is the conerstone of Ghanaian economy. Cocoa is also very important in to the Ghanaian economy. Ghana is also known for its Kente Cloth.
Elmina Castle in Cape Coast still stands as the place where enslaved people were forcibly held until they were transported to the Americas. Millions of West Africans were held at Elmina Castle for focible transport to the Americas. Slavery did not become illegal in Ghana until 1874.
The colors of the Ghanaian flag are very symbolic.
Red symbolizes the blood shed to gain independence.
Green symbolizes the Ghanaian forests.
The Black Star symbolizes African freedom and yellow symbolizes the Gold wealth in Ghana.
